From Donation to Upcycled Products

From donation to Upcycled Products: My step to Step upcycling process

Where the world is running with fast fashion. i wanted to create something that goes with the earth and slows down the pace and can be used- something meaningful, sustainable and have a purpose that's how my upcycling journey begins.

With the donated garments I created something which can be utilized by people and have a purpose gave a second life to the clothes which were once discarded by people, curated & transformed 13 lifestyle products.

Step 1: Gathering & Understanding the donation

Every upcycling project initially starts with analysing the type of garments which we have received the steps starts with the following steps.

      I  start by:
  • Inspecting the material quality.
  • Checking for wear and tear.
  • Understanding the fabric type.
  • Noting any material that can be reused
  • Segregating the garments according the defects.
Donation camps were set in few areas where we can get and collect the garments from other people and it was set for 2 weeks and we collected a lot of donation from the people and students as the camp was set in my college campus.

Step 2: Sorting into three Categories

My 3 categories include:

  • Mend & Send: here the garments which are perfectly fine just a little
mending is required are segregated  and are ready to be send.
  • Bundle of Joy: Here the fabrics are converted into the lifestyle products by targeting a customer for me I chose children so for them I created 5 products.
  • Second Stich: Here 3 lifestyle products were created using the waste fabrics.

Step 3:  Ideation

I planned what i need to do in each category and with what fabrics i need to make the good and what kind of products will be perfect for making with the fabrics . I created a mood board where I placed my inspiration with fabrics I'll be using for making that product.

Step 4: Deconstructing

First the pattern was made then the fabric was cut according to the need for making the product and all the necessary things like linen and other decorative elements were used with donation material only.
  • removing the seams,

  • saving usable part,
  • cutting away damaged area
  • Minimizing fabric wastage
  • Smart layout planning
  • Preserving interesting details (like pockets or decorative stitches)
This is where each piece begins to take physical shape.
This aim to create clean, usable fabric pieces that feel almost like new material while still holding the original garment’s personality.

Step 5:  Stitching, Sewing & Transforming

I assemble each fabric pieces with care- aligning the edges, reinforcing seam and adding my saved elements to the product. Every required items like lining, laces were used from the clothes received.

Step 6: Finishing Touches

No product is complete without the small details.

I add:

  • Labels
  • Closures: zippers, buttons, velcro
  • Final trims
  • Ironing for crisp shape

Step 7:Final Collection Assembly

Finally, after all 13 products are done, I put them back into the original three categories they were born from.

Seeing them together-once old clothes, now thoughtfully designed lifestyle products-was incredibly rewarding.

Each piece has a story behind it of transformation, creativity, and sustainability.
